Fallback MX

Our fallback MX service allows our mail servers to receive and temporarily store mail for your domains during periods when your primary mail server is offline or refusing email for any reason. This service can be provided for any number of domains.

Please note that this service is not needed for domains hosted on our hosting accounts, as we provide multiple MX servers as standard. The service is intended for users who run their own mail server, and require a backup for resilience.

To order the fallback MX service, please contact support.

  • You will need to add MX records directed to our mail servers to your domain's existing DNS records, at a lower priority than your usual mail server. The DNS records for our mail servers are listed on our DNS Settings support page.

  • We will accept email for your domain regardless of whether your primary mail server is up. This is to avoid cases where routing problems can make a mail server appear down from only some locations, but you should be aware that spammers may sometimes deliberately use lower priority MX records in the hope that this will bypass spam filtering.

  • By default, a warning message is sent to the sender if a message is held for more than 24 hours. This can be disabled on request.

  • Messages are bounced if held for more than 4 days.

  • If you prefer, it is possible to list only the Mythic Beasts MX records and then instruct us to relay to a different destination of your choice. If this is of interest, please contact support.
